Why Have I Never Seen a Pregnant Chinese Woman?
Pregnancy is a wonderful time for a woman to take care of herself and her growing baby. Getting good nutrition, going to regular prenatal appointments and avoiding certain foods can help ensure a healthy pregnancy.
This study will examine PA and dietary intake patterns during pregnancy among Chinese women using the CPWCS-OF. Findings will inform future efforts to improve maternal and fetal health.

In China, traditional beliefs about pregnancy and childbirth still play an important role. For example, the country’s famous blogger Li Yuan has two uteruses because she was born with uterine didelphys (a condition characterized by having one cervix and two uteruses). According to Chinese codes of ethics, a pregnant woman should not eat pineapple because it is believed that it can cause miscarriage. In addition, Chinese women may be pressured to gain weight or not eat foods considered to be ‘hot’ because these are thought to have a negative effect on the health of the baby.
In the past, women who were single and pregnant were often sidelined or demoted when they returned to work after maternity leave. But today, Chinese women are more aware of their bodily autonomy than ever before.
